Wisbech Grammar Claim 7’s Title At Home

Wisbech Grammar School won the Cup at their own tournament on Sunday, beating some of the top sides in the area in the process.

The title means that across both fifteen-a-side and seven-a-side versions of the game Wisbech are undefeated at home this season, indeed they have only lost twice all season in total.

They sealed the title with a 17-12 victory over Norwich School in the final, the side who have been so dominant all season across all competitions.

Wisbech’s skipper, Jack Trundley, was the star man, scoring ten tries across the five games on the day.

Wisbech was in a group alongside Gresham’s, Ipswich, and King’s Ely, while Norwich was over in Group 2 with Wellingborough, Culford, and Ratcliffe College.

The top two in each group went to the Cup semi-finals, with the bottom two to the Shield semis. That meant Wisbech would face Wellingborough and Norwich would take on Gresham’s.

Norwich was on fire against Gresham’s for a 27-5 victory, with Wisbech Grammar strong against Wellingborough, 17-5. In the final, the two sides played out a tense game, but is was the hosts that took it by a score, 17-12.

Over the in Shield Ipswich claimed the title, beating Ratcliffe College 27-5 in the semifinals to set up a final against Culford, who had beaten King’s Ely 17-12. In the final, though Ipswich had too much for fellow Suffolk side Culford, winning 17-5.

Ultimately though the highlight of the day was Wisbech’s triumph, one that should fill them with confidence ahead of a testing Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s group.
