The Mount St Mary’s College 7s takes place on Sunday one of the last major tournaments ahead of the Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s.
Sixteen sides will be in attendance, some of the strongest in the region, and indeed the country. The sixteen are drawn into four groups of four teams each, with the top two in each group heading to the Cup quarter-finals and the bottom two to the Plate quarter-final.
The hosts, Mount St Mary’s, are drawn in Group 1 where they are joined by a Bradford Grammar side that is enjoying a good 7s season. Also in the group are RGS Worcester and traditional 7s giants, Ampleforth College.
Group 2 meanwhile sees the hosts of one of last weekend’s key tournaments, Uppingham, alongside three big northern schools rugby sides. Barnard Castle, who have been having a strong 7s season, St Peter’s York, and Hymers College.
Over in Group 3 are Woodhouse Grove, who will surely now be throwing everything at this 7s campaign after their fifteen-a-side season ended in defeat on Saturday at the U18 Schools Cup semi-finals against Warwick. They will not have it all their own way though with Nottingham High School, Yarm, and a Pocklington side that reached the Worksop 7s final all in tow.
Group 4 meanwhile contains the dominant side in the northern 7s region this season, and they are the reigning Rosslyn Park HSBC National School 7s champions, Sedbergh. They have been raking in trophies so far and will be hungry for more.
Alongside them, though, are a strong Durham side, as well as Ashville College and St Louis D.G from Paris, who will certainly provide an element of the unknown to the tournament.
With time ticking away to Rosslyn Park, all sides will view Sunday at Mount St Mary’s as absolutely vital preparation, anyone performing well can be expected to have a good showing at the nationals.
